In this article, we will explain everything there is to know about the identified_contacts list.
What is the identified_contacts list?
When you create your first Automation workflow, the identified_contacts list is automatically created on your Brevo account. This list is located under the marketing_automation folder.
The identified_contacts list is dynamically updated and contains information about contacts who have been identified by one of the following ways:
After visiting your website
If you have installed the Brevo tracker on your website and someone visits your website, the tracker will add a cookie to their browser. The tracker will then be able to identify visitors who have done at least one of the following:
- they have created an account on your website,
- they have submitted a Brevo form on your website,
- they have opened a transactional email or clicked a link in a transactional email sent from your Brevo account.
Once identified, contacts are then stored in the identified_contacts list and may enter one of your Automation workflows.
For example, if you have created a Page Visit workflow, contacts who visit a certain page will be identified by the Brevo tracker and will be automatically added to the identified_contacts list before entering the workflow.
After interacting with one of your emails
After sending an email from your Brevo account, Brevo will automatically identify contacts who open or click your email. Once identified, contacts are then stored in the identified_contacts list and may enter one of your Automation workflows.
For example, if you have created a Marketing Activity workflow, contacts who open a certain email campaign will be identified by Brevo and will be automatically added to the identified_contacts list before entering the workflow.
Can I send emails to the contacts in this list?
The contacts in the identified_contacts list may only be visitors to your website who have been identified by the Brevo tracker, which means they have not necessarily subscribed to receive your emails.
As these contacts may not be opt-in, you should not send them marketing campaigns.
However, as contacts do not need to opt in to receive transactional emails, you can send them automatic emails related to their account activity or commercial transactions, such as Abandoned Cart or Order Confirmations emails.
