Remove the branded subdomain from your domain

❗️ Important
If you use a dedicated IP, do not remove the branded subdomain yourself, as it can break your tracking links and affect your IP reputation. Instead, contact our support team and tell them which domain you want to remove the branded subdomain from.

Remove the branded subdomain from your domain to go back to Brevo's default tracking links, image links, and return-path for that domain. Your other domains stay branded.

Before you start

Make sure:

  • Your account uses a shared IP.
  • You have access to your domain provider account. If you are unsure who your domain provider is, check our dedicated article Identify your domain provider.

What happens when removing the branded subdomain from a domain?

When removing the branded subdomain from a domain:

  • Your sender name, From address, and DKIM signature stay the same.
  • Tracking links and image links use Brevo's default domains instead of your own domain.
  • Return-path goes back to a default Brevo domain.
  • SPF still passes but is no longer aligned with your domain, so DMARC depends on DKIM alone. Keep your DKIM records in place, especially if your DMARC policy is set to quarantine or reject.
  • Links and images in emails you already sent while your domain was branded stop working once the redirection records are removed.

    ❗️ Important
If you chose the Individual DNS records method, you can keep the Image Redirection Record and Redirection Record for a while after the switch to avoid breaking your existing links and images. This is not possible with the Brevo-managed setup, where Brevo updates your NS records automatically.

Remove the branded subdomain from your domain

Step 1: Add your domain again without branding

Delete the domain in Brevo, add it again, and skip the branded subdomain step.

  1. In Brevo, click the account dropdown and select Settings > Senders, Domains, IPs > Domains.
  2. Delete the domain you want to remove the branded subdomain from.

  3. Click Add a new domain and enter the same domain again.
  4. At the Set up a branded subdomain step, leave the field empty and click Continue to skip that part.

  5. Choose the same authentication methods as you previously did when adding your domain the first time, because the records are already in your domain provider. To learn more about each method, check our dedicated article Set up your domain in Brevo.
  6. When you see the records, click Authenticate domain at the bottom of the page.

  7. Confirm that your domain shows Authenticated as the domain status and Not branded as the branding status.

If you chose the Brevo-managed setup method, where you added two NS records, you are done. Brevo updates your NS records automatically when you add your domain again without branding. You do not need to delete anything from your domain provider account.

Step 2: Delete the branded DNS records (Individual DNS records only)

This step is only for the Individual DNS records method, where you added CNAME records to your domain provider.

❗️ Important
  • Delete the branded DNS records only after your domain shows Not branded.
  • Keep your Brevo code, DKIM, and DMARC records in place.
  1. Log in to your domain provider account and open the DNS settings for your domain.
  2. Delete the Branded record. To see what it looks like, expand the Branded record section:

    Branded record

The name of this record is your branded subdomain, which is send.news.the-green-yoga.com in the following example. Depending on your domain provider, the name might appear without your root domain, for example send.news.

    Record Name What it does
Branded record send.news.the-green-yoga.com Links your branded subdomain to Brevo for SPF and return-path

Here's an example of what this record can look like in a domain provider account:

  3. Delete the Image Redirection Record and Redirection Record. Deleting them breaks the links and images in emails you already sent while your domain was branded, so the timing depends on whether recipients can still open those emails:

    • If recipients are unlikely to open or click those emails again, or if you never sent any, delete the records now.
    • If you sent emails recently, keep the records for a while and delete them once you no longer need those links and images.

To see what they look like, expand the Redirection records section:

    Redirection records

The names of these records start with r. or img., followed by your branded subdomain, which is send.news.the-green-yoga.com in the following example. Depending on your domain provider, the names might appear without your root domain, for example r.send.news.

    Record Name What it does
Redirection Record r.send.news.the-green-yoga.com Routes tracking and click links in your emails through your domain
Image Redirection Record img.send.news.the-green-yoga.com Routes image links in your emails through your domain
