Test messages sent from an automation

Test your automation to confirm that emails, SMS, push notifications, and wallet messages are sent and displayed correctly before activation. After running a test, you can review the received messages and track message activity in transactional logs.

Step 1: Test your automation

💡 Good to know

Test messages consume credits, just like regular messages. Make sure you have enough credits available.

When you test an automation, a real contact from your Brevo account—such as yourself—goes through the workflow to confirm that all message steps, such as emails, SMS, push notifications, or wallet messages, function as expected, including those in split branches.

  1. From an automation created in the new editor that includes at least one message step, click Test.

  2. In the Contact to test dropdown, type and select the contact you want to use for testing. Their information will be used to personalize the messages, and they will receive the messages.
  3. If you included multiple triggers based on events and your messages include personalized content based on the automation’s triggers, select which trigger’s data to use to personalize the messages.

  4. Click Test messages to run the test. The results of your test appear.

Step 2: Review the results of your test

❗️ Important

If you close your test results, you won’t be able to reopen them. To view your test results again, you’ll need to send another test or examine your transactional logs.

Once your test is complete, review the results to confirm everything is functioning as expected. You can check the status of each step, verify that the messages were received correctly, and examine your transactional logs for more detailed insights.

Check the status of each step

Once the test is complete, you can review the status of each step:

  • ✅ Processed
The automation successfully performed the action. If the test contact has an email address, phone number, or is subscribed to push or wallet notifications, they will receive the message.
  • ⚠️ Skipped
The automation could not perform the action, and the test contact did not receive the message. Verify that you have saved the message step correctly.

Verify that the messages were received correctly

Check the messages received in the test contact's inbox, phone, or desktop to ensure they display correctly and that personalization variables are replaced with the contact's information.

❗️ Important

If your messages contain event variables, these variables will only be replaced during testing if the test contact has previously triggered the corresponding event. For example, if the test contact has made a purchase in the past, the message will display data from that purchase. If they haven't, the variables will not be replaced.

Examine your transactional logs

For more details, check your email and SMS transactional logs to track how messages were processed and whether they were sent, delivered, or opened.
