Contact details
Contact details are saved in attributes. There are two types of attributes you can use in segments:
- Default attributes: attributes automatically created by Brevo.
- Custom attributes: attributes that you manually create according to your needs.
Default attributes
🔎 Segment by email domain
You might want to promote a product only to students or to employees of a given company. You can segment your contacts by email domain by filtering all email addresses ending in .edu or with a certain "company.com" domain.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts with the "brevo.com" domain name in their email address: Contact details > Email (address) > Ends with > enter the domain name, e.g., brevo.com.
🔎 Segment by added date
To re-engage with contacts who have been on your list for more than 1 year, you might want to send them a promo code. You can segment your contacts based on their added date and use this segment in an Automation workflow to automate the sending of your email.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who were added to your list more than 1 year ago: Contact details > Added date > More than > 12 months.
Custom attributes
🔎 Segment by spoken language
If your website is available in several languages, you might want to send your email campaigns in the same languages. You can segment your contacts based on their language (that you previously saved as a custom attribute) and use this segment when selecting the recipients of your email campaigns.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts whose language is French: Contact details > LANGUAGE (custom attribute) > is equal to > enter or select a language, e.g., French.
🔎 Segment by date of birth
If you run an e-commerce website, you might want to send different product recommendations based on the age of your contacts. You can segment your contacts based on their date of birth (that you previously saved as a custom attribute) and use this segment when selecting the recipients of your email campaigns.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts younger than 30 years old: Contact details > BIRTHDATE (custom attribute) > In the last > 360 months.
CRM
🔎 Send an introduction email
If you use a CRM, you might want to introduce yourself to new leads assigned to you. You can segment your contacts based on the owner they were assigned and use this segment in an automation workflow to automate the sending of your email.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who were assigned to you: CRM > Their contact owner > Is exactly > select the name of the contact owner, e.g., Jane Doe.
🔎 Send a re-engagement email
To keep a clean list of contacts, you might want to send a re-engagement email to contacts who didn't engage with your last email campaigns. You can create a segment for contacts who received your last email campaigns but who didn't open them and then send them a re-engagement email.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who received your email campaigns in the last 3 months but who didn't open them:
- Email > Email received > Email campaign > At least > 3 times > In the last > 3 months.
- AND > Email > Email not opened > Email campaign > In the last > 3 months.
🔎Follow up after a link is clicked in an email
To check that contacts engage with your emails and CTAs, it can be useful to view how many contacts actually click the links in your emails. You can create a segment for contacts who clicked a specific link in your emails.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who clicked the "Why Brevo?" link in our welcome email:
- Email > Link clicked in an email > Transactional email > At least > 1 time > Over all time.
- Choose which transactional emails > Email name > Is exactly > enter the name of your welcome email, e.g., Welcome to Brevo.
- Choose which emails > Link URL > Is exactly > enter or select the link URL, e.g. https://www.brevo.com/blog/becoming-brevo/.
SMS
🔎 Monitor the unsubscriptions after sending an SMS campaign
After sending an SMS campaign to your contacts, you might want to monitor and see how many contacts unsubscribed from it. You can create a segment for contacts who unsubscribed from a specific SMS campaign to monitor this metric.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who unsubscribed from our SMS campaign named "Valentine's Day coupon":
- SMS > Unsubscribed from SMS > At least > 1 time > Over all time.
- Choose which campaigns > SMS name > select the SMS name, e.g., Valentine's Day coupon.
🔎 Follow up after a WhatsApp message
To keep a clean contact list, you might want to send a follow-up email WhatsApp campaign to contacts who didn't engage with your last campaigns. You can create a segment for contacts who received your last WhatsApp campaigns but who didn't open them and then send them a re-engagement campaign.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who received your WhatsApp campaigns in the last 3 months but who didn't open them:
- WhatsApp > WhatsApp campaign received > At least > 3 times > In the last > 3 months.
- AND > WhatsApp > WhatsApp campaign not opened > In the last > 3 months.
Ecommerce
🔎 Follow up after a purchase
After adding a new product to your ecommerce website, it can be interesting to know what your customers think of it. You can create a segment for contacts who purchased a specific product and ask them to leave a comment on the product page.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who placed an order for a ball of yarn called Rainbow Cotton:
- Ecommerce > Order placed > At least > 1 time > Over all time.
- Define orders > Product name > Is exactly > enter the name of the product, e.g., Rainbow Cotton.
🔎 Monitor customers who add an article to their cart
If you plan on changing your checkout flow, you might want to monitor how many customers have added an article to their cart without purchasing it and compare the results a few weeks after the change. This metric can help you see if your change was useful in boosting your conversions. You can create a segment for contacts who added an article to their during a specific period of time.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who added an article to their cart between January 1st, 2023 and March 31st, 2023: Ecommerce > Article added to cart > At least > 1 time > Fixed period > 01/01/2023 - 31/03/2023.
Website
🔎 Follow up after a specific webpage visit
To notify your contacts of a new product, you can choose to send an email campaign to people who have viewed that category of products in the past and maximize the number of contacts who will engage with your content. You can create a segment for contacts who have visited a specific webpage at least 3 times in the last 3 months.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who visited the "Baby food" page on your website at least 3 times in the last 3 months:
- Website > Webpage visited > At least > 3 times > Over all time.
- Define pages > Webpage URL > is exactly > enter or select the webpage URL, e.g., https://example-website.com/shop-by-product/baby-food.
Meetings
Follow up after a meeting
You might want to follow up with contacts who had a meeting with you and send them a satisfaction survey to learn more about what they thought of the experience. You can create a segment for contacts who have had a meeting with you in the last month and then send them your satisfaction survey by email.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts who started a meeting with you in the last month: Meetings > Meetings started > At least > 1 time > In the last > 1 month.
Mix different conditions
Segment by custom date attribute and purchase
If you have an online wedding store, you might want to congratulate your customers once they've actually gotten married without having to remember each wedding date and send individual emails. You can mix different conditions and create a segment for contacts who placed an order on your store and who got married a few days ago, and use this segment in an Automation workflow to automate the sending of your email.
➡️ In this example, we're looking at a segment of contacts whose wedding was 1 week ago and who have placed at least one order in your store in the last 2 years:
- Contact details > WEDDING_DATE (custom attribute) > In the last > 3 days.
- AND > Ecommerce > Order placed > At least > 1 time > In the last > 24 months.
🔎 Monitor customers who didn't purchase from your website during a big sale
If you've sent an email campaign to inform your contacts of a big sale that will happen on your website on the same day, and some contacts opened the email but didn't purchase anything.
➡️ You can mix different conditions and create a segment for contacts who opened your email campaign on this specific date but didn't make a purchase on the same day.
- Email > Email opened > Email campaign > At least > 1 time > Exact date > select the exact date you sent the email/you planned your sale, e.g., 06/03/2023.
- Choose which campaigns > Email name > Is exactly > enter the name of your email campaign, e.g. SALES ALERT: 50% off EVERYTHING today only!.
- AND > Ecommerce > No order placed > Exact date > select the exact date you sent the email/you planned your sale, e.g. 06/03/2023.
