FAQs - Why emails are marked delivered but are not received?

Your emails are marked as delivered when Brevo successfully sends them to your recipients' servers. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that your recipients have received them. Indeed, in some cases, the emails may not be received because of external reasons beyond Brevo's control.

In this article, you can find a list of possible reasons, along with some solutions you and your recipients can implement to ensure that your emails are well received in their mailbox.

⚫️ Asynchronous bounce

An asynchronous bounce refers to emails initially marked as delivered, only to be later rejected by the recipients' servers. It can occur for the same reasons as a hard bounce. The recipients' email addresses either don't exist, are invalid, or their mail servers have blocked the delivery.

There are a few things you and your recipients can do to avoid asynchronous bounces as much as possible:

  • Use a double opt-in subscription form to prevent fake email addresses from signing up.
  • Clean your contact list to avoid keeping email addresses containing typos or that don't exist.
  • Ask your recipients to check with their IT teams or ISPs to find out why they are not receiving your emails.

🔐 Domains and firewalls security

Your recipients may not receive your emails because of security measures linked to their domains or firewalls. Some of them block emails from the same domain sent via a third party, as they may be deemed suspicious. This is common with corporate and academic filters. Your recipients' firewalls work like spam filters and regulate incoming emails according to a set of rules established by the email server.

➡️ To avoid that:

🛬 Landing in Spam or Promotions tab

Your recipients may have several categories and tabs in their inboxes. Therefore, your emails might be landing in the Spam folder or the Promotions tab. This placement is not due to Brevo, but rather the recipients' ISPs or Gmail's algorithm, if they use Gmail.

➡️ To avoid that, you can send test emails before sending your campaigns to your recipients:

  • If they don't appear in your Primary inbox, you can find them by performing a quick search with your email subjects in the mailbox's search bar.
  • If they are landing in the Spam folder, check our dedicated article about Why are emails being delivered to the spam folder?.
  • If they are landing in the Promotions tab, ask your recipients to save your contact details.
