Segments are powerful tools for filtering out contacts based on specific criteria. This is especially useful when targeting contacts with certain characteristics and preferences.
Segments allow you to perform various actions on these filtered contacts. For example, you can send email campaigns tailored to their interests and behavior. This is a great way to increase engagement and conversions, as it shows your contacts that you understand their needs and are willing to provide them with relevant content.
Good to know
- In this article, we explain how to create a segment from scratch but you can also use some of our segment templates to save time and effort. To learn more, check our dedicated article Segment your contacts using a segment template.
- You can add a maximum of 100 conditions in a segment.
- For multi-select options in a condition, you can add a maximum of 50 tags.
- If you have more than 2 million contacts, you have to click Search Contacts to apply your segment to your contacts list.
💭 Create a segment from scratch
You can create a segment by selecting the conditions you want to apply.
Step 1: Access the segmentation tool
To access the segmentation tool:
- Go to Contacts.
- Click Add filter.
- Go to Contacts > Segments.
- Click Create a segment.
- Select Create segment from scratch.
Step 2: Choose your first condition
You can now add the condition you want to apply. To learn more about the conditions and options available, check our dedicated article What conditions are available to segment my contacts?.
- In the dropdown menu, choose a condition within a folder.
- Fill in the required fields. The contacts who meet this condition will appear below the segment.
Step 3: (Optional) Add more conditions
You can add more conditions and choose to join them with + And or + Or. This functionality allows you to further refine your segments to target your audience precisely.
- After you apply your first condition, click + And, or + Or.
- Select and refine your condition the same way as in step 2.
- Repeat as many times as you want to add conditions, up to 100 conditions.
The following table describes both the behavior of the + And and + Or options.

Step 4: Save your segment
Once you're done creating your segment:
- Click Save as segment.
- Name your segment.
- Select an existing category or create a new one.
- Click Create.
🤖 Segment your contacts with AI
You can create segments easily based on your needs by writing a prompt. Segment with AI will generate a segment based on your prompt, eliminating the need to manually go through all conditions to find what works for you.
- Go to Contacts.
- Click Segment with AI.
- Write a prompt corresponding to the contacts you want to segment.
➡️ For exampleIf you want to segment contacts that have not opened your email in the past 6 months, you can write "Contacts that have not opened any email in the last 6 months" and click Generate segment.
- Click Generate segment. You can manually refine the created segment or adjust your prompt.
